Nigella sativa is an herbaceous flowering plant native to the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. Nigella seeds are sometimes called black cumin or kalonji – but they’re most commonly known just as “black seed.” Roasted, the seeds are often used to flavor breads and cheeses. Unroasted, the seeds and the oil made from the pressed seeds are rich in antioxidants, and have been used medicinally by different cultures in the region for centuries.
